We live in a big state!

As any Denver divorce attorney will tell you, our metro area is a very big geographical area.  Aurora is now practically the size of Denver proper if not bigger.  I have had a few cases where divorcing couples with kids end up living miles away than ever anticipated from one another when the separation occurs.  The result can be devastating to an effective parenting time arrangement if not given the right consideration.

I cannot reveal any specifics, but I have had several cases over the course of my career where parents live as far away (let’s say) as from Castle Rock to Thornton; or Green Valley Ranch to Arvada.   A forty minute commute may not seem so insurmountable in the first few weeks or months of a separation, but it will take its toll eventually.

What seems like a good idea during the summer vacation might become unmanageable once school starts.  My suggestion is that separating parents take into account the costs of their time (and gasoline) as well as their rent and utilities when thinking about where to make any new start.   And always remember:  the kids come first!

Thanks for staying tuned.
